This month I read The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley. This is actually my second time reading this book, as when I looked back on this book I did not feel like I fully grasped everything it had to offer during my first go through. This book is nothing less than powerful, from the early life of Malcolm being on of constantly inner and outer struggle with the worlds around him, to his journey in becoming a prominent leader for the Nation of Islam, and eventually to him visiting Mecca and denouncing the teaching of Elijah Mohammad. It shows the journey of a man looking for peace and equality in life when it was not offered to him. The story eventually ends when Malcolm X is fatally shot by 3 members of the Nation of Islam, the organization that he once was a prominent leader of.
I could never understand fully what Malcolm had gone through in his life, and the struggles that he faced on a daily basis. Still Malcolm story inspires me, through his constant search for knowledge and education, his unwavering determination to stand up to inequality, and his ability to lead others throughout any phase in his life.
I know this book may not seem like one that will connect to everyone but I do believe that this is a must read for everyone. I feel it is a story that often overlooked and under appreciated that can challenge how people think through their everyday. If I am ever lost on what I should read next, I know I can always come back to this book.
